All-Star Game Goalie Update
By Alan Carter
You would expect goalies selected to the All-Star game more than adequate at holding down the net. That wasn’t the case though as the West beat the East 12-9 in a shootout. Each goalie took their turns playing 1 period and each seemed to be off their game or overwhelmed by their All-Star counterparts.
East Goalies
Ryan Miller had an average night when compared to the other goalies but still seemed off kilter as he allowed 3 goals and made 9 saves.
Martin Brodeur leads the league in wins but he also led the All-Star goalies with 6 goals allowed. Brodeur faced 16 shots, the most of the evening but was still only able to stop 10 and that paved the way for a West victory.
Cristobal Huet made his first All-Star debut and faired no worse than any of the other goalies. Huet made 5 saves and allowed 3 goals in his 3rd period action.
West Goalies
Miikka Kiprusoff got the start for the West and fared well. Kiprusoff kept the West tied through the 1st period by allowed 3 goals and capturing 8 saves before his time was up.
Marty Turco is no stranger to the All-Star venue brought just enough to his performance that allowed the West to build a 9-6 lead though the 2nd period. Turco captured a game leading 12 saves.
It was up to Roberto Luongo to seal the win for the West and with 3 more goals by his offense in the 3rd period not much was needed. Luongo allowed 3 goals and looked to allow only 2 in the 3rd until a Sheldon Souray scored with only 35 seconds remaning. Luongo made 9 saves.
