Cristobal Huet
It appears as though 2006 might be the year for Cristobal Huet to realize his potential as a true National Hockey League starting goaltender.
Huet was born in France in 1975. Cristobal Huet was taken 214th overall in the 7th round of the 2001 draft, in an era that was seeing a plethora of goalies on the market. Huet’s record with his junior team had been a good one, but he was to see little action in the competitive National Hockey League, with 53 games in his first two seasons, largely as a result of the injuries to the two LA goaltenders ahead of him in the lineup.
After the lockout of 2004-2005, Huet found himself the backup goalie for the legendary Montreal Canadiens, behind JoseTheodore. Theodore’s star had fallen considerably in Montreal, due to a lack of focus on his hockey career. 2005 would see more controversy built around Theodore, and by the time he was traded during the 2006 deadline flurry, it was already plain that Huet would be taking over the Number One job.
In the season so far, Huet has more than doubled his career high in shutouts with seven- this in a season where goal scoring is higher than ever due to the new rule changes, and all of them since February 2. He has twice been named the NHL’s Defensive Player of the Week, and is a key reason why Montreal is still in the fight for the playoffs. United Way -USA
