Dwayne Roloson

Dwayne Roloson was born on October 12th 1969 in Simcoe, Ontario Canada. He attended and played hockey for the University of Massachusetts Lowell but went undrafted after graduation. In 1994 he was signed as a free agent to the Calgary flames. He spent time between Calgary and their AHL counterpart the St. Johns flames until he was later traded to the buffalo sabers. Roloson switches teams again being offered a place on the Columbus blue jackets team after the 2000 NHL expansion draft. Rather than join the team he signed with the AHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, the Worcester Ice cats.

Roloson decided to try the NHL again. He was offered a spot with the Minnesota wild in 2001. In the 2002-2003 seasons, Roloson shared net minding duties with then goalie Manny Fernandez. During this season, the Minnesota wild made their first ever play off appearance. Defeating the Colorado avalanche in the first round and the Vancouver cannucks next. Roloson also earned his first all star appearance in the 2004 NHL all star game.

In March of 2006, Roloson was traded to the Edmonton Oilers. This decision brought much controversy to the team organization. Things got worse when Roloson struggled in the first part of the season. However, attitudes soon changed when Roloson helped the Edmonton Oilers make it to the NHL play offs and eventually the Stanley cup finals in 2006.

Game 1 of the Stanley cup finals brought injury to Roloson. He hyper extended his elbow and endured a significant knee injury as a result of a collision with another player. This finished his stint in the Stanley cup finals forcing him to be replaced by another goalie. This also forced roloson to endure months of intense physical therapy to get him fit for the up coming 2006-2007 season.

Many were surprised when Roloson returned fighting fit at the start of the new 2006-2007 season. Many expected that he would only be signed to a 1-2 year deal at best due to his age and prior injury. The Edmonton Oilers signed roloson to a three year deal in hopes that he would eventually end his career with this club.

Dwayne Roloson continues to play for the Oilers and make great contributions to his team. He has been the recipient of the Roger Cozier Saving Grace award for having the NHL’s best save percentage. Despite criticism and his age, Dwayne Roloson continues to represent his team and the sport of hockey incredibly well.
