Manny Legace
Born on February 4, 1973, in Toronto, Ontario, Legace is considered small for a goalie. He is five foot nine inches tall and weighs in at 162 to 165 pounds. Despite his size, his determination and concentration keep him moving up the ranks in stats. This year, his goals against average was at the top of the league’s statistics at 1.99, and his save percentage at a solid .920, making him fifth among some other stand out goaltenders.
Legace was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings in July of 1999. Previously, he was selected in the eighth round for the Hartford Whalers in June of 1993. He was the 188th pick overall in the draft. When the Whalers franchise moved to North Carolina in the 1997-1998 season to become the Carolina Hurricanes, Legace went with them. He was traded soon after by the Hurricanes to the Los Angeles Kings for conditional pick in the 1999 draft. However, not meeting conditions for the pick, Legace’s draft choice was forfeited.
Before playing pro, Legace played hockey in Canada and was named to the Canadien Hockey League All Star Second Team in 1993. He was also named to the Ontario Hockey League All Star First Team in the same year. Then in 1994, he became a member of the Canadian Olympic Team, which brought a silver medal home to their countrymen. Legace won the Harry “Hap” Holmes Memorial Trophy in 1996, as well as the Baz Bastien Trophy. In the same year, he was named to the American Hockey League All Star First Team. And most recently, he was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings in 2002. Special Olympics
