Martin Brodeur
Martin Brodeur, who has goalkeeping in his genes, draws his inspiration from his father, Denis Brodeur who was a goaltender on Canada's 1956 bronze medal winning Olympic team.
As a junior he played for St. Hyacinthe before being selected by the New Jersey Devils in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. It is one decision that Devils would never regret because Brodeur has brought great stability and success to the team. In fact, his domination has been such that it is unthinkable to talk of the success of the Devils without acknowledging Brodeur’s contribution.
His greatest asset is his positioning. He is invariably in the right place at the right time making the shooters’ job a nightmare. Another advantage that Brodeur has is his stick handling and his side to side mobility. He has great reflexes and loves to dominate the game. Brodeur has not only saved goals but also scored one in a 1977 playoff against Montreal – which is something of a record itself.
Brodeur’s high point came in the 1994-95 NHL season when he powered the Devils to win the Stanley Cup. This was only the start of Brodeur’s wining streak. He has won over 300 career games, and is among the elite seven goalies whose career records 30-or-more wins season after season for eight successive seasons.
Brodeur also has the 2000 and 2003 Stanley Cup titles under his belt as also the prestigious 2003 and 2004 Vezina Trophy and the 1997-98 and 2003-04 William M. Jennings Trophy. He has been named the National Hockey League Player of the Week several times.
He also shares the National Hockey League single-season record for most wins by a goaltender (16), 1995 and holds the National Hockey League single-season record for most minutes played by a goaltender (4434) in 1995-96.
Besides this, Martin has also worn the Canadian jersey having been a member of Canada's World Cup team (1996 and 2004), World Championship team (1996 and 2005) and Olympic team (1998 and 2002).
