Matt Keetley
At six feet and 215 pounds, Matt Keetley is a fair-sized WHL goalie who uses his size well to block the goal. At the same time he is very agile and can move quickly from side to side. Being a southpaw, he is not so elegant to watch but he does his job well.
He certainly seized the opportunity that came his way when Kevin Nastiuk of Medicine Hat Tigers pulled out following a sore hand. Keetley put together a 6-2 January signaling his arrival on the WHL map. His end of the season record is a smart 21-5-3 record, and there are many who believe that this young goalie will go a long way.
A Calgary Flames draft pick, Keetley has already won one WHL player of the month award. The award came Keetley’s way following the 19-year-old’s January performance which had nine consecutive wins, including four shutouts. Keetley recorded a 1.44 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage.
The highlights of this Medicine Hat star, whose favorite NHL player is Jose Theodore of the Montreal Canadiens, are: joining the Tigers for his 3rd season in the WHL, being drafted by the Calgary Flames, winning a WHL Championship and going to the Memorial Cup.
His favorite memory today is winning the provincial pee wee ‘AA’ semi-final in double overtime. This is sure the change as he plays big time, and takes on top teams. Interestingly Keetley’s second love is golf, and outside the ice rinks can be seen on the greens. He enjoys eating pasta and peanut butter and banana sandwiches, while his favorite music is country and R and B.
He certainly is a star in the making. Click here to add this page to your favorites
