Mental Training for Goalies

"Keith your work is cutting edge"

"There's a different kind of mental toughness required of a goalie"

"Goaltending is all mental " - GLEN HANLON

I received your new CD last week and have listened to it four times... it is excellent. To me this CD is even better than the first CD. The difference is that this one builds the goalies confidence.
Ian Wotherspoon, goalie coach since 1964

Goaltending is one of the most mentally demanding positions in all of sport, yet very little training is provided in this area of the game. Some people go as far as to say that the mental side of goaltending accounts for 90% of success, some experts downplay this number to as low as 50 percent. Whatever the actual number is, there is no disputing mental toughness plays a big part in how far a goalie’s career will advance. If you look back at all the top goalies, and read articles about them you will hear one theme over and over. You won’t hear that he cut down his angles well, or that he had a good glove hand. As for the goalies who were super successful you hear...

"He was mentally tough"

"Great concentration"
"Nerves of steel in the play-offs"

"Always had his game face on"

"For goaltenders everything is playing between your ears.   If you can believe it, you can do it.  If you're not confident when you start, it makes a difference"

                                                                                  - PATRICK ROY

How do you get this same mental toughness?

How do you grab an advantage over your opponent?

Just by listening to the CD or MP3 on the order page you will build a strong foundation in which to build your mental skills. This CD is a wonderful introduction to mental imagery. I have traveled the world spending literally thousands and thousands of dollars to study with the best teachers in many fields, including certification in sports hypnosis, in order to put together the best material possible to help goalies reach their peak potential. When I played the nets I was lucky enough to have some games in the zone, but I wasn’t able at that time to learn how to consistently control the mental game. That is why I spend so much time, energy, and money now developing skills to pass on to the
next generation of goalies.

You would be surprised how many experts in the field of mental training for athletes...never played the game!!!I am not joking. One workshop I went to had an instuctor emphazize the importance of learning the jargon of an athlete's sport because it can be embarrasing to say the wrong thing. He went on to give examples from his own experience. I think a better piece of advice to the class would have been, "If you don't know what you are talking about, don't play with the athlete's mind!!!" Although this is a labor of love, I take this work very seriously. I don't think anyone should be teaching mental training to an athlete if they aren't adept in both areas, the sport itself AND how the mind works. Not only have I seen examples like I just mentioned where a person has the mental training skills, but no sports knowledge, I have also seen the other side where a decent athlete, who knew what worked for them becomes a mental coach without any training on how the mind works.

"Only a goalie can appreciate what a goalie goes through" - Jaques Plante

"Nobody understands the position who hasn't played it" - John Garrett

A few reasons why this could very well be the best investment you ever make in your goaltending career.

Have you heard of Pareto’s principal? You may know of it as the 80/20 rule.We all know goaltending is a major part mental, so to be your best you must master the part of the game that will give you the biggest improvement. In other words, do what matters most: mental training.
Mental imaging can allow you to consistently enter into flow, and flow is just before entering into the zone.

"In the afternoons, I just mentally run through the game, visualize myself making the saves, patting the guys on the head after a victory . . . Hey, the mind is a powerful thing.   And we don't tap into it enough" - Byron Dafoe
