Mental Training for Goalies

The position of goalie on a hockey team is one of the most demanding in all of sports. The skill, the quickness, the toughness, and the mental acuity all combine to create a great goalie. But without one of these, the goalie is average at best. Even the most talented athlete can fall short if they do not have the mental preparedness to make it in this tough arena.

Mental training is one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of goalie training, and yet one of the most important. As you develop your skills, your coordination, your reflexes, you also must develop a strong sense of mental toughness. The best goalies are known not just for their outstanding play, but also for their incredible skills of concentration. They do not get to the playoffs and fall apart under the stress. Instead, they forge ahead with a kind of mental toughness that allows them to perform at their peak even in difficult situations.

This is the kind of ability every goalie must develop to be successful. Without this mental toughness, you will not be able to advance in the sport, nor to perform at your best when it really counts. You can have the best glove hand in the world, but if you do not have the concentration and focus and positive outlook to use it successfully under pressure, it is useless.

There are proven methods for developing this mental acuity. Special training is available that allows a goalie to focus and visualize the game in a way that leads to success and a level of concentration they had not been able to achieve on their own. Using mental imagery, you can use these techniques to find a place of consistently high mental performance that will enhance your game each and every time.

So before you invest a fortune in a goalie training camp, keep one thing in mind: your body only performs as well as your mind will allow. You can only go so far with your physical training, but your mind has unlimited potential. So put your money where your fortune is, in your mental game. Your results will speak for themselves.
