The New York Islanders' Rick DiPietro turned aside 35 Dallas Stars shots to notch his first shutout of the season Wednesday night. Dipietro has stopped 67 of 68 shots in his last two games. The Isles scored once per period against Marty Turco, whose 19 saves helped his GAA remain under 2.00 in 14 starts for Dallas.
San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov denied 40 Colorado shots, including 21 in the second period, as the Sharks held back the Avalanche 4-3. A 1-1 tie after two broke wide open with five goals exchanged in the third frame. Nabokov's counterpart JoseTheodore finished with 22 saves and his first assist of the season.
Jean Sebastien Giguere's gaudy 10-0 record for the Ducks was dented by the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday. Giguere was chased after allowing five goals on 11 first period shots en route to a 7-4 loss in Anaheim. The Flyers mustered only four shots on goal over the final two periods. Robert Esche meanwhile stayed busy, stopping 37 of 41 shots in the win.
Starting again in place of Ryan Miller, the Buffalo Sabres' Martin Biron stood toe to toe with surprising Ottawa goaltender Ray Emery until the third period, when the Senators pulled away and won 4-2. It was Biron's first loss in five starts on the year. Emery, expected by many to back up free agent acquisition Martin Gerber, continues to lead the NHL in save percentage and is second to Dominik Hasek in goals against.
Other Wednesday winners:
Boston's Tim Thomas stopped all three Maple Leafs attempts in a shootout Wednesday to backstop the Bruins' 3-2 win over Toronto.
Defending Stanley Cup MVP Cam Ward bounced back from a subpar game two nights ago to turn aside 23 New York Rangers shots as his Carolina Hurricanes won at home.
Nashville's Tomas Vokoun made 29 saves against Columbus to help his Predators win 5-4.
