NHL Goalie Updates
Goalie Mike Dunham started in place of Rick DiPietro for the New York Islanders and all he did was stop 43 Florida Panthers shots in a 4-1 road win. "It was just one of those games where the puck was hitting me," Dunham told the AP. The Islanders are 3-0-1 on their current road trip. Ed Belfour was the losing goaltender and made 29 saves for Florida.
Martin Brodeur staked the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 win in Toronto. Brodeur's 33 saves included 17 in the third period. Mikael Tellqvist was recalled from the AHL to start for the Maple Leafs in place of Jean-Sebastien Aubin, who was ill. Starting goaltender Andrew Raycroft remains sidelined with a strained groin.
Brent Johnson had 36 saves but Glen Murray scored in overtime as the Boston Bruins beat the Washington Capitals 3-2. Johnson faced 22 of the Bruins' 38 shots in the third period and overtime. Tim Thomas started his fourth in a row for the Bruins and turned aside 27 Capitals efforts.
Number one pick Marc-Andre Fleury improved his record with the Pittsburgh Penguins to 9-5 as he denied the New York Rangers 3-1 at home. Fleury had 23 saves, including five with the Penguins shorthanded. Henrik Lundqvist was the losing goalie for the Rangers despite 22 saves.
In a first round rematch from last year's Western Conference playoffs, the Edmonton Oilers beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in a shootout behind Dwayne Roloson's 38 saves. Roloson salvaged the win despite allowing the tying goal with 3.9 seconds left in regulation and counterpart Joey MacDonald on the bench in favor of an extra attacker. MacDonald had 18 saves.
Tomas Vokoun made 28 saves as the Nashville Predators beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2. PASCAL LECLAIRE was solid for the Blue Jackets at even strength but his team exposed him to 13 Nashville power play shots.
The Minnesota Wild's Niklas Backstrom is the answer to the trivia question, what goalie (finally) allowed Joe Sakic's first career shootout goal? The Colorado Avalanche won 2-1 on Sakic's regulation tally and shootout goal. Backstrom had 30 saves. Peter Budaj made 28 saves for the victors.
Ryan Miller returned to the Buffalo Sabres' net in Ottawa, but was outduelled by the Senators' Ray Emery 4-1. The Senators outshot the Sabres 32-13 over the final two periods.
Stanley Cup MVP Cam Ward returned to the Carolina Hurricanes' net as well after a night off and beat the Dallas Stars 5-4 on the strength of 21 saves. Counterpart Marty Turco turned aside 20.
Cristobal Huet's third straight win came the hard way, as the Montreal Canadiens goalie made 39 saves en route to a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers. Johan Hedberg had 30 stops in the losing effort.
Goalie Dan Cloutier turned aside 36 Phoenix Coyotes shots as the Los Angeles Kings won 5-3. Curtis Joseph mopped up for David LeNeveu in the loss.
Vesa Toskala had an easier night, stopping 17 Philadelphia Flyers shots in a 6-1 San Jose Sharks win. Robert Esche was replaced by Antero Niittymaki in the loss.
