NHL Goalie Updates

Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller led the Sabres to victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-4.  Miller had 32 saves.  The Leafs' Andrew Raycroft stopped 22 Sabres shots.  The final score included two shorthanded empty net goals.

Wade Redden scored the game winner for Ottawa with seconds left in overtime on the team's 35th shot of the night, beating Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki for the third time and icing a 3-2 Senators win.  Niittymaki was named the game's second star in defeat.  Ray Emery anchored the Senators with 24 saves.

The Atlanta Thrashers took care of the Washington Capitals 4-2 behind Bobby Holik's 300th NHL goal and 24 saves by Johan HedbergOlaf Kolzig played well in defeat, stopping 28 Thrashers attempts.  Both goalies were penalized for leaving the crease during a parade of fights and scrums that saw 34 penalties assessed in the last two minutes of regulation.

Columbus goaltender Pascal Leclaire had 35 saves but was beaten by Bill Guerin in a shootout to cede the game to the St. Louis Blues 4-3.  The Blue Jackets, who announced the hiring of Ken Hitchcock as head coach before the game, have lost seven straight.  Manny Legace had 29 stops for the Blues, 12 in the third period.

Roberto Luongo had 27 saves for the visiting Vancouver Canucks, who beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in overtime.  Dominik Hasek took a hard luck loss, withstanding a 17-shot onslaught in the third period and making 15 saves, 26 overall.  It was only the second time in 15 starts that Hasek had allowed as many as three even strength goals in a game.

Canadiens goalie Cristobal Huet had 36 saves as Montreal finished off the Minnesota Wild 4-2.  Niklas Backstrom had 31 saves of his own for the Wild.

A 1-0 game after two periods became a 4-2 Islanders win over the Carolina Hurricanes despite 44 saves by John Grahame in the loss.  New York outshot their visitors 20-1 in the first period and 37-7 after two.  Rick DiPietro had 13 saves in the win.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were without Sidney Crosby and could have used him, losing 4-3 to the Boston Bruins in a shootout.  Boston goalie Tim Thomas faced down three Penguins in the deciding session, having replaced Brian Finley in net in the second period.  Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury had 28 saves.

Johan Holmqvist had 31 saves as his Tampa Bay Lightning bested the Florida Panthers and Alex Auld 6-4.

Dallas Stars backup goalie Mike Smith shut out the Nashville Predators 1-0 on the strength of 17 saves.  Tomas Vokoun had 25 saves in defeat.

The Colorado Avalanche spoiled Teemu Selanne's 500th career NHL goal by beating the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 in a shootout.  Jean-Sebastien Giguere turned aside 41 Avalanche attempts in the loss, including a first period where the Ducks were outshot 16-2.  Jose Theodore made it stand up with 30 saves.

The Phoenix Coyotes dominated the New Jersey Devils at home and beat Martin Brodeur 3-1.  The Coyotes played great defense in front of goalie Curtis Joseph, who was called on to make only 14 saves.

Mikka Kiprusoff's 25 saves overcame the Chicago Blackhawks as the Calgary Flames won 4-1.  Nikolai Khabibulin faced 39 shots and stopped 36.

The San Jose Sharks chased Dan Cloutier from the Los Angeles net and beat the Kings 6-3 at home.  Vesa Toskala had 24 saves in the win.
