Ondrej Pavelec
Ondrej Pavelec is a young, Czech goalkeeper trying to break into big time. He started off as an average goalie for Kladno but picked up steam around 2004-05. His talents were first noticed in the 2004 Junior World Cup that was held in Czech Republic and Slovakia. Pavelec played a major role in helping his national team finish second. Another tournament where Pavelec came out tops was U-18 WJC.
The 6’ 1” player, who plays butterfly style, is extremely athletic and flexible, and can cover a good amount of the net with his size alone. He is very calm for his age (born 1987), and quite focused. Pavelec’s greatest strength is his ability to read the play. This gives him a little extra time to position himself well and challenge the shooter. When it comes to blocking his quick reflexes are an added bonus. He also plays angles well and is quick on the rebounds.
All these are huge pluses. But Pavelec still needs to improve his game. One of the complaints is that he allows too many goals. He is also suspect against high shots, and needs to work on his stick handling ability. But he surely is a goalie with a future. Click here to add this page to your favorites
