Ron Hextall
Ron Hextall was born to play ice hockey. His grandfather was the legendary Bryan Hextall, who figures in the Hall of Fame, and his father was NHL Player Bryan Hextall Jr. It is no surprise that with such genes, and his natural flair and fiery temper, Ron Hextall went on to become one of the most colorful goaltenders of his time.
Ron Hextall's finest moments were spent in front of the Philadelphia Flyers' goal. He had two stints with Philadelphia Flyers -- the first one from 1986-87 to 1991-92, and the second from 1994-95 to 1998-99.
To the consternation of his rivals, Hextall changed the style of goaltending by frequently darting out of the goal and playing proactive hockey. This did not mean that he left the goal untended. On the contrary, he was a great goaltender.
Hextall's unconventional goalkeeping also made him the first goalkeeper to send the puck flying into the rival net. This was not a freak shot. Hextall did it again in the playoffs against Washington later.
Hextall won several awards during his career, the most famous of them being the Vezina Trophy and the Conn Smythe Trophy. He was also named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 1987. Besides Philadelphia Flyers, Hextall spent a season with the Quebec Nordiques and another season with the New York Islanders. Calendar Mental Goaltending Home Page
