Ways to Improve Your Coaching Skills
As a coach you know you take on a lot and make quite an effort to coach the athletes you have control of. It takes a lot of patience, perseverance, and more. In order to be an effective coach, you must take the time to develop the right skills required. Learning does not come easy, but if you take certain steps, you will find out that you can become a better coach to your team. These steps include:
Being consistent: You have to be consistent with the way you talk to your players. You also must talk the talk and walk the walk. You cannot give them mixed messages or they won’t respect you.
Always be honest: Be honest with your team. But always do so in a positive way. They know they make mistakes. Do not ignore their mistakes or they will not respect you.
Be concise: Don’t speak unclearly to them. Before you speak to them about anything, make sure you know what you want to say so your point can get across correctly.
Watch your body language: What would look better – you standing at the edge of the dugout cheering on your team, or stooped over inside the dugout cursing at every bad play that occurs. If your team sees you standing at the dugout, they will feel you are part of the action and will be more confident in their play.
The one biggest part of being an affective coach is listening. Pay attention and hear what they say. It goes along way to developing unity among your team and you’ll be better as a coach Mental Goaltending Home Page
