Sports Visualization
Have you ever noticed a boxer as he stands in his corner of the ring, he is bobbing his head with his eyes closed, his body swaying to and froe, what is he doing? He is performing a rehearsal technique called visualization. Visualization can be used to “mentally” prepare for an event.
There are many researchers that claim that visualization can even tone as well as strengthen your muscles. By visualizing which muscles you will be working, those muscles will be better prepared for the “strain” they will endure. Let’s look at what images do you need to visualize in order for this to work. The images can be different things and range from different sceneiors depending on the person doing the visualization. For example, visual images and pictures might be helpful visualization for one person, whereas the use of how the body may feel (Kinesthetic) can be better suited for another. Some people even use hearing the roar of the crowd as their visualization tool to prepare themselves. It is thought by some that mental rehearsal of both the mind and the body one can train to actually perform the skill that they are visualization. Keep in mind that there is no correct or incorrect visualization tool, it all depends on the individual and what drives them.
In some forms it is the same as mentally preparing for a big test in school. You visualize the question or pertinent information in order to prepare your mind for the “test”. By preparing for a sporting event in the same manner you’re prepared for test in school, your body will be prepared.
In the end, visualization is a great tool to prepare your body for any event it is about to embark on. In relation to sports, visualization provides time for the body and the mind to combine for the physical and mental strain that they both will endure. Visualization what will happen and preparing your body is a great way to provide your body with the awareness it will need to benefit through the event, no matter how physically challenging it will be.
